I tried sealing the leak along the top cover with JB Weld and red RTV as seen in the following pics.  Click the thumnails for bigger pics.  The leak sealed for almost a year but then came back with a vengence.

So I bought a re-seal kit off of ebay and dove in.  I took measurements for almost everything and counted screw turns on anything adjustable.

The VW Diesel Parts forum has a great thread showing dis-assembly of the Bosch VE pump.  This link is what you'll need.

I suggest making marks with a sharpie and taking loads of pics along with dis-assembly so you can refer to them when you start forgetting what you did.

Make sure you get the nub from the throttle lever into the governor shaft collar.  I didn't, couldn't get it to start and then when it did, it ran away.  I pulled the fuel line to get the engine to quit.  Took the top of the pump off and found out I busted the lever and nub.  A local diesel shop had a spare for $10.  Dropped it in and it started right up.

I played with the smoke screw and throttle until I got it runnig very smooth.  It now runs better and peppier than when I first got the Ugly Duckling on the road.

That is after I did a clutch job.
