The Problem

The vehicle initially cranked but wouldn’t start. I changed the fuel filter, checked for water in the separator and troubleshot the glow plug circuit. I found the glow plug bus bar was not receiving any voltage. I found the fusible link was damaged. So I rewired it with a 60 amp blade holder and fuse. There was gray (un-burnt fuel) smoke out the tail pipe when it was cranked. Then the engine bound up. The thought of a bent valve went through my mind, so off the head came.

The number 1 piston coming into contact with a valve trashed the head. The valve subsequently broke off after it punched a hole in the piston and bent the piston rod.

As you can see below the other cylinders had considerable soot and carbon built up. If you look close enough you can see where a valve made an impression in the # 3 piston. Actually all the valves had come in contact with all the pistons. The only thing I can surmise is that the valve clearances were off and/or the belt stretched or the cam gear jumped a tooth. The previous owners obviously did not take care of this vehicle.
